Thank you, Mr. Panetta, for realizing the importance of foreign languages for our nation’s security. Last year Mr. Panetta, CIA director, launched a program to double the number of analysts who speak and understand languages like Arabic, Farsi and Urdu — all critical in the fight against terrorism. His plan is to have the Agency’s own “in-house university” offer night classes as well as online training to help new recruits study languages. While that is great news, we still need a program that would teach foreign languages in the schools from kindergarten onwards. Remember that young students can learn and retain languages more easily than older adults.
