I always wondered what it would have been like to have learned Chinese beginning in elementary school. My current school district has a Chinese emersion program from kindergarten onwards, but unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to enroll in it. From what I’ve been told, very few Americans are in that emersion programs and, in fact, many of those students are Asian. Chinese is a very difficult language to learn because it requires students to devote a lot of time. In February, 2010, the New York Times published an article on line (“Will Americans Really Learn Chinese?”) in which a number of contributors debated about whether Americans were really committed to learning foreign languages like Chinese in the long run. The full article is available at: http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/07/will-americans-really-learn-chinese/ It’s really worth reading. Maybe someday I’ll also have the opportunity to learn Chinese as long as universities don’t get rid of all of the foreign language teachers!!
