According to CETRA, CIA Director Leon Panetta and the University of Maryland’s Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) will be hosting a foreign language summit on December 8, 2010, in Hyattsville, MD., at the Marriott Inn and Conference Center. Expected to attend the summit are members of Congress, the Intelligence community, language teachers and policymakers.
Panetta has been one of the most vocal advocates for improved foreign language training. In a statement to his employees in May 2009, Panetta emphasized the importance of foreign languages to the Agency’s successful operations and announced an aggressive plan to build a “truly multilingual workforce.” According to his five-year plan, the Agency would double the number of analysts proficient in critical languages.
Way to go, Mr. Panetta! You have the right idea! Hope that more people in government and education follow your lead!
